When did you first start attending Northeast and why did you stay?   My wife Darci and I started attending in January 1990 after we moved to Louisville from Lexington.   We came on the recommendation of Wayne Smith, our Pastor from Southland Christian Church in Lexington.  We stayed because we really enjoyed Bob’s preaching and the fellowship of a “smaller” church (about 450 at the time).  Plus interestingly enough we both already knew a few people from our past who were already attending and we never looked back!

What or who inspires you? I am inspired by great leaders, great music, and sunsets in Florida

What’s your idea of a perfect day? Any day where I am able to be with my family and we are relaxing and having fun together.  We had a perfect week-plus of vacation this summer at Hilton Head Island – nine days of total fun and relaxation!

What was your first step in getting involved at Northeast? Ron Kastens asked us to help with the High School ministry.  What a blast that was!  We even went to see the Christian Rock band Petra with several of the kids, which we were not even sure was “legal”, and through that experience we came to learn that Christian music (no matter the form) can reach people of all ages.

Your biggest indulgence? Really good coffee!  I’m a self proclaimed coffee snob, and proud of it. I do not drink gas station coffee.

What do you think makes a good leader, someone that you’ll follow? People have to be able to trust a leader for them to be followed.  It‘s trusting that the leader has the best interests of the organization in mind, that they care about and value each member of the team, and that they expect and get results the right way.  That type of trust can only be earned through the personal integrity of the leader – you have high standards and are consistent in your values no matter where you are or who you are with.  You walk the talk.  People hear what you say, but they see what you do.

What has God been teaching you lately? That if I take the time to reflect on the scriptures I am reading, I will come to know Him more and more and it will in fact grow my faith.

If you could ask God one question, what would it be? When we get to heaven will we be able to have conversations that fill in the gaps of what we don’t know right now or things we have always wondered about?

If you could be on a reality TV show, what would it be? Iron chef.  I love cook so I’d like the challenge of trying to beat the clock and the competition while creating something cool to eat.

What or who makes you laugh? Mike Gabbard and Ronnie Cordrey.  Those two guys ain’t right…..

What is your nickname, and how did you earn it? Some of the guys call me Strat Daddy.  Not sure if it’s because I’m old enough to be their daddy, or if they are sick of me talking to them about their strategies much like a parent would.

What are two things always in your fridge? Sugar free Hazelnut Coffeemate creamer, Franks Hot sauce.

In a few short lines, here is my faith story… I have a wonderful faith heritage.  My grandparents and parents were believers and as such we went to church a lot when I was young.  As a teen, I went through the traditional confirmation class at the Methodist Church where we attended. Then, as with many people, college was my “far country” (see Luke 15:13).  Not that I was completely reckless, but God was not a priority in my life.  After college, at the invitation of a friend, I started attending Southland Christian Church in Lexington and realized that something was missing in my life and I did not have a faith that was my own.  So after a few months of attending I decided to come forward and make my profession of faith and be baptized by immersion at Southland Christian Church by Wayne Smith.   Since that time I have experienced both wonderful highs and challenging lows, but because of the love of Christ, I have a source of joy that never changes and it is not dependent on my circumstances.

What is your favorite…

·    Bible verse? Proverbs 3:5-6

·    Time of day? Morning – I’m an early riser

·    Movie? Gladiator

·    Childhood TV show? Any Bugs Bunny cartoon – my brother and I have all the lines memorized. ·    Websites? ESPN, foodnetwork, the weather channel

·    Book (besides the Bible)? Good to Great

·    Word or catchphrase? Strat-e-cution (strat – uh – que – shun)  “When strategy and execution come together in perfect harmony”

·    Sport/Team? Any sport the Kentucky Wildcats are playing.  I’m also a lifelong Cincinnati Reds fan.

·    Vacation place? Hilton Head or the Gulf side of Florida

·    Types of music? Any but Jazz is my favorite

·    Restaurant? A restaurant in Tampa Florida called Burns Steakhouse.  Stoney River is good, but Burns is on a whole different level.

Describe your job at Northeast, and why you love what you do. My job at Northeast is to help Bob with strategic planning and goal setting, help oversee some of the NECC and Clifton staff, and generally be available as a resource for our staff to help problem solve.  We have a great group of people on our staff and I enjoy seeing them succeed!

How long have you been working at Northeast? 4 years

Retirement dream? Move someplace south and still be active in a local church.

What was your first job? My first real “get a paycheck” job was McDonalds.  I started at the McD’s in Middletown right after it opened in 1976 and worked there during summers and over Christmas break during college.

What’s one goal you have for the next year? Lose 10 pounds and improve my fitness level.

Name 3 things on your ‘bucket’ list. Go deep sea fishing and fight 8-10 hours and reel in a Marlin or Sailfish

Darci is my wife of 22 years. Darci is the energetic and happy face in the crowd no matter where she is.  She loves to see people laugh and have a good time.  She serves in the Children’s Ministry at NECC and is also very involved at Christian Academy where our daughters attend(ed) school. Sarah is my oldest daughter.  She graduated from Christian Academy of Louisville in May 2010.  She is studying to be a teacher in the area of Early Childhood Education at Campbellsville University. Catie is my youngest and is a senior at Christian Academy.  Catie is very involved in student leadership at CAL and in the NECC High School Ministry.

Proudest moment? Everyone would say the birth of their children or their wedding date which are definitely up there, but I think mine has been more recently to see my daughters really come into their own, become independent young women who are making great decisions and choices in their lives.
